Was the virtual Writer’s League of Texas (WLT) agent symposium worth it?
Yes! If you are a writer interested in traditional publishing, this program offered an excellent opportunity to gain insider insight into the industry. Each session was well organized, and the presenters were very generous in answering questions at the end of their presentations. It addressed questions I didn’t know I had and confirmed some of my existing assumptions.
Some takeaways that have stuck with me:
- Agents are busy.
- Don’t expect feedback from an agent from a query letter.
- A social media following isn’t as important to agents as it once was. Some say just having a website is fine. Choose a platform and focus your efforts there.
- Finding the right comps is really important. Make sure they are current and well-received.
- Rejection happens. All you need is one yes.
- It’s important to find an agent who has similar goals for your career.
- Continuously work on building a community of champions of your work.
- Copyright law does not protect facts, titles, names, or short phrases.
- Everyone has an opinion. Don’t change something that feels integral to your story.
- In an offer, the most money doesn’t always mean you should accept it. Other factors might be more beneficial for you in the long run.
In 2026, WLT will be having the symposium in person from June 26-28, at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Austin. Get the details here. Maybe I’ll see you there!
